This Week’s Notable News & Trends

This week saw notable developments demonstrating the practical implementation of blockchain-related technologies through concrete use cases.

Mitsubishi Corporation has begun leveraging the distributed ledger infrastructure of JPMorgan Chase to enable instant USD transfers on a 24/7 basis. While traditional cross-border payments have long been constrained by time and operational limitations, such initiatives are expected to significantly improve the efficiency of corporate fund transfers. It is important to note that this approach is not based on public blockchains, but rather on a bank-led, permissioned network, reflecting its development within the framework of the existing financial system.

Meanwhile, a recent report by Yano Research Institute projects that the stablecoin market (on an outstanding balance basis) in Japan will reach approximately JPY 14.7 trillion by FY2030, expanding to around JPY 30 trillion when including tokenized deposits. In Japan, under the revised Payment Services Act, stablecoins are legally defined as ’electronic payment instruments,’ with a comprehensive regulatory framework covering issuers, service providers, and intermediaries. This framework prioritizes safety and reliability as a means of payment equivalent to cash, rather than positioning stablecoins as investment assets.

From a use case perspective, beyond B2B payments and cross-border transfers, expansion into B2C areas such as payroll is anticipated. Notably, the report highlights programmable money as a key area of focus. By integrating with AI agents, programmable money enables automated control over how and when funds are used. In particular, early adoption is expected in investment and asset management, where mechanisms could automatically select investment targets based on predefined risk tolerance and expected returns, and execute allocations within specified parameters - thereby enhancing traditional financial services.

On a global level, Standard Chartered Bank has reported that the velocity of stablecoins has doubled over the past two years, indicating growing usage beyond payments into areas such as liquidity management and new financial services. The bank also maintains a bullish outlook, projecting the market could reach USD 2 trillion by 2028. These developments highlight the evolving relationship between stablecoins and existing financial infrastructure, and underscore the importance of closely monitoring future trends.
