This week, there were a series of noteworthy developments in Japan.
First, on June 24, SBI Group officially issued JPYSC, a trust-type yen-denominated stablecoin. The issuer is SBI Shinsei Trust Bank, co-developed with Singapore-based fintech company Startale Group. This marks the first issuance in Japan of a trust-type stablecoin in which a trust bank manages the backing assets. 10 billion JPYSC were issued on the first day, and the token is currently available on a limited basis exclusively within SBI VC Trade accounts, with transfers to external wallets not permitted. The plan is to transition to circulation on a public blockchain once legal and tax matters have been resolved. The defining feature of the trust-type structure is that, unlike fund transfer-type stablecoins, it is not subject to the ¥1 million cap on balances and transfers, making it well-suited for large-volume settlements, corporate remittances, and on-chain FX transactions by institutional investors and corporates. Startale Group CEO Sota Watanabe commented that “the yen stablecoin is the most fundamental building block of on-chain finance.”
The following day, June 25, SBI Group announced the full acquisition of Bitbank for ¥46.7 billion. A simple aggregation of SBI VC Trade and Bitbank’s figures as of end of April 2026 puts the group’s combined assets under custody at approximately ¥1.1 trillion and account count at approximately 2.92 million, making it the largest crypto asset exchange operator in Japan by AUC. Completion of the transaction is expected around October, subject to clearance from the Japan Fair Trade Commission. By building out its stablecoin issuance and distribution infrastructure while simultaneously acquiring the country’s largest customer base, SBI is working to establish itself as a platform capable of delivering stablecoins, crypto assets, and on-chain finance in an integrated manner.
On the same day, Circle and Nomura Holdings announced plans to launch a USDC-based instant foreign currency settlement service in Japan, targeting a 2027 start. According to BIS data, Japan’s FX market handles approximately $440 billion in daily transactions, yet current interbank transfers take two to three business days to settle. The service aims to compress this settlement time to minutes by allowing companies to convert yen into USDC and send funds over a blockchain network. Under the arrangement, Nomura HD will handle domestic client relations, regulatory compliance, and integration with existing banking systems, while Circle provides the USDC payment rails on the blockchain. Target use cases include cross-border supplier payments, transfers to overseas subsidiaries, and corporate FX settlement. The partnership was first reported by Nikkei Asia.
