This week’s pick:
:link: Nikkei: “Japan’s Three Megabanks to Jointly Issue Yen-Pegged Stablecoin, Mitsubishi Corp. to Use for Settlements”

On October 17, Nikkei reported that Japan’s three megabanks — Mitsubishi UFJ, Sumitomo Mitsui, and Mizuho — plan to jointly issue a yen-denominated stablecoin, which Mitsubishi Corporation intends to use for actual settlements.

I think this collaboration among highly trusted financial institutions to integrate blockchain technology into real-world payments suggests that Japan’s web3 landscape is moving from proof-of-concept to implementation. Such efforts to balance regulatory compliance and practical usability closely align with JSC’s vision of building a compliance-first, Japan-sovereign web3 infrastructure. If bank-issued stablecoins gain traction, they could streamline corporate transactions and international settlements, marking another step toward the broader adoption of digital assets in Japan.

Interesting! The MUFG-backed stablecoin adopts a “trust-based” issuance model, which according to Japan’s Payment Services Act, places no restrictions on the remittance amounts. This contrasts with JPYC, which was recently announced as Japan’s first yen-backed stablecoin, where remittance amounts are limited to under 1 million yen per transaction. JPYC currently falls under the “fund-transfer” type issuance model.
