This Week’s Notable News & Trends

This week saw a series of developments signaling that stablecoins are moving toward becoming foundational financial infrastructure.

In the US, two of the world’s largest traditional asset managers, Fidelity and State Street, made their moves into the stablecoin reserve management market in quick succession. On June 16, State Street launched the State Street Stablecoin Reserves Money Market Fund (SSCXX), a GENIUS Act-aligned government money market fund designed specifically for stablecoin issuers to hold and manage their legally required reserve assets. State Street CEO Yie-Hsin Hung noted that the GENIUS Act brought clarity to how stablecoin reserves can be invested, effectively creating a new market almost overnight.

Fidelity followed with a similar reserve management fund aligned to the GENIUS Act’s reserve asset requirements. With BlackRock, BNY, and Goldman Sachs having already entered the space, the race among Wall Street’s biggest names to capture stablecoin reserve management mandates is now firmly underway. The stablecoin market currently stands at approximately $300 billion, but Citi projects it could expand to as much as $4 trillion by 2030 - a scale at which the corresponding flows into short-term Treasuries and money market funds would be transformative. The GENIUS Act is not merely a regulatory framework, but can also be said to have created a new financial market into which Wall Street firms can enter.

On the market data front, a report published this week by CryptoRank offered a striking picture. While the total crypto market cap has fallen roughly 50% from its September 2025 peak of approximately $4.2 trillion to around $2.1 trillion, stablecoins’ share of that market has doubled from 7.6% to 15%. Notably, this shift was not purely a function of other assets falling - stablecoin supply itself grew, from approximately $286 billion to around $316 billion over = the nine months period since the September 2025 peak. Investors moving out of volatile assets and into stablecoins during a downturn is not new behavior. What is notable here is that supply expanded even as the broader market contracted. If stablecoin market share does not revert when prices recover, that would be a meaningful signal that stablecoins are becoming embedded as financial infrastructure rather than functioning as a temporary safe haven.

Finally, one development from Japan worth noting. On June 10, SBI Shinsei Bank launched a three-month pilot program allowing depositors to receive vouchers worth 20% of their deposit interest, redeemable for BTC, ETH, or XRP. To redeem the voucher, customers must open an account with SBI VC Trade, the group’s licensed crypto exchange, which actually holds and manages the crypto, making the program as much a customer funnel into SBI’s exchange business as a deposit perk. The program covers approximately 4.33 million accounts, with a permanent rollout under consideration for this fall. Embedding crypto assets into a standard banking product, rather than offering them as a standalone investment vehicle, remains unusual in Japan, and reflects the gradual convergence of traditional banking services and digital assets as the regulatory environment continues to mature.
