This week, the traditional banking world made its move.
On September 1, twenty-one of the world’s leading financial institutions - Goldman Sachs, MUFG Bank, Citi, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, UBS, Deutsche Bank, Crédit Agricole, Lloyds, Rabobank, Commerzbank, BBVA, Santander, Scotiabank, TD Bank Group, Capital One, PNC, WisdomTree, Fidelity Investments, Sirius International Holding, and Standard Bank - announced their commitment to jointly establish a new company in the second half of 2026 to support the issuance of a stablecoin. MUFG Bank is the only Asian institution in the group.
The new company will initially focus on a USD-denominated stablecoin, targeting a market launch in the first half of 2027. It has longer-term ambitions to expand into other G7 currencies, with a euro offering as the stated priority, and will target a broad range of use cases across wholesale, institutional, and retail markets, including cross-border payments and digital asset settlements. The company name has yet to be announced. The initiative intends to be compliant with the GENIUS Act in the US and MiCA in the EU, with Boston Consulting Group and Brunswick Group serving as advisers.
This announcement builds on the October 2025 disclosure that an initial group of ten banks was exploring stablecoin issuance. Eleven additional institutions have since joined, expanding the consortium into a truly global group spanning North America, Europe, East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
The institutions behind this initiative are the same ones that have long underpinned the global financial system, and the same ones that once kept their distance from stablecoins as a peripheral technology associated with speculative assets. With the regulatory frameworks of the GENIUS Act and MiCA now in place, the risk appears to be no longer in participating, but in being left behind. This is a development worth watching closely.
Also from Japan, SBI VC Trade launched a new service on September 2 allowing users to receive staking rewards in JPYSC, the yen-denominated trust-type stablecoin, across all 16 staking-eligible assets on its VCTRADE platform. Rewards are calculated at the yen equivalent at the time of receipt and credited at a 1 yen = 1 JPYSC rate. External transfers are not yet supported, keeping usage within the platform for now, but the expansion of JPYSC use cases just two months after its June 24 launch is worth noting.
