This Week’s Notable News & Trends

Over the past week, several notable developments have emerged in Asia’s digital asset space, particularly around stablecoins.

In Malaysia, Bullish Aim—a company involving the Regent (royal family member) of Johor—announced the launch of a ringgit-pegged stablecoin, RMJDT. The project is being developed within a regulatory sandbox framework and will be issued on Zetrix, a Layer 1 blockchain that supports the Malaysia Blockchain Infrastructure (MBI). RMJDT aims to expand the use of the ringgit in cross-border trade and payments, while also helping attract foreign direct investment. In parallel, the group plans to establish a digital asset treasury company holding approximately RM500 million worth of Zetrix tokens, with a potential expansion to RM1 billion, to support operational stability such as network fee management.

In Taiwan, the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) has indicated that, subject to progress in the development of a comprehensive crypto regulatory framework under the Virtual Assets Service Act, the country’s first regulated stablecoin could be launched as early as the second half of 2026. The peg—whether to the New Taiwan dollar (TWD) or the U.S. dollar (USD)—has not yet been decided, and initial issuance is expected to be led by licensed financial institutions.

In South Korea, activity involving major web2 companies continues to gain attention. NAVER, South Korea’s leading web platform conglomerate - acquired the operator of the country’s largest crypto exchange Upbit for US$10.3 billion. BDACS (a Korean digital asset company) launched a fully-backed Korean Won stablecoin KRW1 on BNB Chain and Polygon with a focus on multi-chain compatibility, targeting infrastructure- and enterprise-level use cases including FX.

Similar trends can also be seen outside Asia. In the UAE, major telecommunications companies and banks are working together to integrate a dirham-pegged stablecoin issued under a central bank license into everyday payment use cases. This initiative has drawn attention as a clear example of stablecoins entering the implementation phase under regulatory frameworks.

Taken together, these developments indicate that stablecoins and blockchain technologies are evolving from purely speculative assets into regulated payment and trade infrastructure. Looking ahead to 2026, activity is expected to accelerate not only in terms of regulatory development but also in real-world deployment, particularly in cross-border payments, across Asia and globally.
