This Week’s Notable News & Trends

The biggest news this week was Sony Bank’s announcement on July 7 that it had received conditional approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish a national trust bank subsidiary, Connectia Trust, National Association. The New York-based subsidiary will be wholly owned by Sony Bank and capitalized at $40 million. Its purpose is the issuance and management of a U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoin. According to the official release, the subsidiary aims to provide financial support for Sony Group companies’ business operations in the United States, and to contribute to creators and fandom communities through the creation of experiences befitting the digital age. With over 30% of Sony Group’s external revenue coming from the U.S., the primary goals are reducing credit card fees and lowering payment friction. Bastion, a U.S.-based stablecoin infrastructure provider, will handle issuance, reserve management, and custody. That said, by securing its own trust bank charter, Sony will be able to bring the entire stablecoin lifecycle under its own management within a single federal regulatory framework. Full operations are contingent on final OCC approval and are targeted for 2027.

The OCC trust bank model has also been adopted by Ripple, Circle, BitGo, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Paxos (in the U.S.) Sony is aiming to build a payment utility contained within its own ecosystem, starting with PlayStation Store. Given that USDSC is already circulating on Sony’s Soneium blockchain, this U.S. move appears to be part of a broader effort to connect Sony’s global digital content economy through its own payment rails.

In other developments, SBI Holdings announced on July 7 that it had led EDX Markets’ $76 million Series C as the sole investor. EDX is an institutional-only crypto trading platform founded by Citadel Securities, Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Sequoia, and Paradigm, and operates a model that separates trading from custody. The investment is part of SBI’s continued build-out of its digital asset ecosystem, following the launch of JPYSC, the acquisition of Bitbank, and its domestic distribution of USDC and RLUSD.

In South Korea, fintech super-app Toss (with 30 million users) partnered with Optimism and Sunnyside Labs to begin a three-month proof of concept testing a Korean won-backed stablecoin on OP Stack, evaluating KYC/AML compliance, settlement controls, and transaction privacy. The initiative is still at an exploratory stage, but signals that South Korea is beginning to seriously examine stablecoin payment infrastructure.
