This week, the crypto industry took another step toward mainstream finance - while also being reminded of how much work still lies ahead.
On the regulatory front, the U.S. GENIUS Act is moving forward. The Federal Deposit Insurance Commission (FDIC), the government entity that typically provides insurance for banks’ deposits, officially published its proposed rules for stablecoin issuers this week, covering capital, liquidity, and custody standards, with a 60-day public comment period now open. For traditional financial institutions, this is an important signal that the rules of the game are finally becoming clear.
Europe is moving too. Six major Swiss banks, including UBS, PostFinance, and Raiffeisen, teamed up with Swiss Stablecoin AG to start testing a Swiss franc-backed stablecoin. And in the EU, a euro stablecoin called ‘Qivalis,’ backed by 12 banks, is expected to launch in late 2026. Big banks on both sides of the Atlantic are now actively building their own digital currency infrastructure.
But there’s also reason for caution. A whitepaper by Google Quantum AIidentified five ways quantum computers could attack well-known blockchains, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, with a combined dollar exposure measuring just below $2 trillion. It’s not an immediate threat, but the message is clear: as the infrastructure grows, so does the potential damage. In 2018, the Ethereum Foundation made post-quantum security a top priority and continues to work on dedicated solutions. It is expected that a major protocol upgrade incorporating quantum resistant cryptography will be set to come in the next few years.
And in the middle of all this, one story stood out for a different reason. The New York Times named Blockstream CEO Adam Back as the most likely candidate to be Satoshi Nakamoto, based on an AI-supported analysis of writing styles in old cryptography forums and emails amongst the cypherpunks of the 1990s. Back denied it. The industry’s reaction was calm - most people agreed that it doesn’t really matter who Satoshi is. Even as the space matures, this kind of mystery reminds us that crypto has a culture unlike any other.
